Music (and Barbershop)
has been a part of Dave's life since literally before he can remember.
His Dad was part of a quartet (The Accidental Four) which won
the State Junior Champoinship while in High School. His Mom claims
that, at the age of 3, Dave would sit in front of the hi-fi and
sing along to the entire LP of the original cast recording of
The Music Man, which debuted on Broadway the same year he was
born.
Dave went on to make music his primary field of study in High School and college. He has two (count 'em, two) degrees in Music from Michigan State: one in Vocal Performance and one in Vocal Pedagogy (which means "teaching people how to sing"). In addition, he studied both the piano and cello for several years, and earned some pocket change singing and conducting. Since, as most musicians will tell you, most musicians cannot make ends meet just with their music jobs, Dave found a career in the software industry, where he has been for more than 25 years.
In the midst of raising a family and writing software, Dave has been involved in music in many ways: as choir director and Music Minister, teacher of evening classes in Classical Music Appreciation, and as an all-purpose accompanist. His official involvement in Barbershop started in early 2007, but he has been singing along with Barbershop recordings for many years (learning all four parts, just for fun). He claims he can sing any part except Tenor, and frankly has no idea how those Tenors do it.
His wife of more than 30 years, Helen, also has a Music degree from MSU, and is determined to change the world (or at least, her corner of it), having served on a local school board for 12 years. Dave has three adult children, all of whom are musical, but all of whom have wisely decided to find employment in other fields. His daughter is a writer and Assistant Editor at the most widely-read magazine about the field of science fiction. One son is an excellent truck mechanic, and the other has not yet finished his schooling, but will end up with a PhD in Math (the show-off...).
In addition to
listening to complex Classical music and analyzing it in his head
(just for fun), Dave enjoys reading, fooling around with his stock
portfolio, and playing as much golf as he can fit in. He even
has an official hole-in-one to his credit. (161 yards, 7 iron,
and slightly into the wind, for those keeping score.)
